About Dice

A die is a throwable object with multiple faces, used for generating random numbers for tabletop games, gambling, and more. While the 6-sided cube is most common, dice come in many shapes.

Common Dice Shapes

  • Tetrahedron: 4 faces (d4)
  • Cube: 6 faces (d6)
  • Octahedron: 8 faces (d8)
  • Pentagonal trapezohedron: 10 faces (d10)
  • Dodecahedron: 12 faces (d12)
  • Icosahedron: 20 faces (d20)

How Random is a Dice?

In theory, a fair die has an equal probability of landing on any of its faces. In reality, imperfections in manufacturing can lead to slight biases. Virtual dice, based on pseudo-random number generating algorithms, are often closer to true randomness than most physical dice.
